Mr. Coffee Modern Steam Espresso/Cappuccino Maker ECM250

Date Published: 4/21/08

The Mr. Coffee ECM250 is a compact, lightweight steam espresso and cappuccino maker that delivers up to four shots of espresso coffee into a handy glass carafe.

Styled entirely in black, the ECM250 utilizes a steam boiler system to quickly produce espresso. The process is relatively simple. Measure the appropriate amount of water and pour it into the boiler, then screw the boiler cap on tightly. Next, measure the proper amount of finely ground espresso coffee into the filter, then position the filter under the drip head. Finally, place the 4-cup glass carafe under the drip head, and you're ready to go.

An oversize control dial turns in two directions and has settings for brewing and steaming/frothing. We found the dial to be somewhat difficult to turn, and we had to exert considerably more pressure than expected to move it to the desired setting. We encountered the same resistance when turning the dial back to the OFF setting.

Apart from the tightness of the dial, we had no difficulty obtaining fresh, dark espresso coffee. Less than 90 seconds after turning the dial to brew, we heard sounds of steam building up in the machine. Within the next minute, espresso began to stream steadily into the glass carafe, completely filling it by the 3-minute mark. After the espresso is made, leftover steam in the boiler can be channeled through the ECM250's frothing wand to steam or froth milk for latte or cappuccino drinks. We were surprised by the amount of steam that remained, as it proved sufficient to froth two full pitchers of milk, and there was still enough left to clean the frothing wand.

While a thin layer of crema formed on top of the espresso during brewing, most of the golden foam dissipated while we frothed the milk. The espresso was hot (165 degrees Fahrenheit) and tasted quite rich, and adding frothed milk gave it the foamy authenticity of a coffeehouse cappuccino drink. Amazingly, the ECM250's exterior parts all stayed quite cool to the touch during the brewing process.

Additional features include an indicator light that signals when the machine is on, a removable drip tray, a handy measuring scoop and convenient cord storage. For an inexpensive yet effective espresso and cappuccino maker, take a look at the Mr. Coffee ECM250.

Pros: Compact and lightweight, makes up to four cups (shots) at a time, fast-brewing with excellent steam capability for frothing
Cons: Dial is tight and difficult to turn, little crema
