The Mr. Coffee Coffee and Espresso Machine ECM21 is a dual-function machine that satisfies the needs of both coffee and espresso drinkers. A compact black plastic housing holds a traditional 8-cup glass coffee carafe on one side and a 4-cup espresso carafe on the other. Even so, the unit is compact at 12 inches wide, 10 inches deep and 11 inches tall, taking up only slightly more room than a basic coffee maker.

The coffee and espresso functions are operated independently, but cannot be set to run at the same time. The controls are remarkably simple. A small, round flip dial starts the coffee brewing and, when left in the "on" position, maintains the coffee's temperature via the warming plate. The espresso is delivered through a steam boiler system, which heats the water in a pressurized tank and then forces it through the grounds quickly for maximum flavor extraction. The steam unit is not quite as powerful as a pump would be but has the added advantage of producing up to 4 cups (or shots) of espresso in a single batch.

The unit also has a steam jet frothing wand, which lets you froth milk for cappuccino or latte. Other features include a removable plastic water tank, removable drip tray, brew pause-to-serve, removable cone-shaped filter basket, and brew strength selector. The Mr. Coffee Coffee and Espresso Machine ECM21 has settings for on/off, regular or strong coffee brew control, and espresso and steam control. The coffee maker uses cone-shaped paper filters (not included).
