Mountain Hardwear EV2 four-season tent
Date Published: 5/16/06
There is no such thing as an indestructible tent, but Mountain Hardwear's EV2 comes close.
This two-person, four-season tent is extremely sturdy, resistant to strong winds and heavy snow, and is fire-retardant. The latter is an important consideration for high-mountain climbs where it is sometimes necessary to cook inside the tent (this is never advisable under ordinary conditions, and proper ventilation is a must).
The EV2 is a single-wall tent; this makes it much more lightweight than other four-season tents; however, the fabric is both waterproof and breathable, thus obviating need for a separate rainfly. The structure is based on three Atlas Scandium SL poles that are strong and light. For added strength, power clips are used at pole intersection points, stress points are back-tacked, and zippers are bias bound. The canopy is made of polyester coated with polyurethane. The floor uses nylon taffeta; the footprint is rather narrow, to allow placement on narrow ledges if necessary. All seams are waterproof and welded, so that seam sealant is not needed. Zippers are double-sided for easy operation.
A vestibule has a floor with a porthole in it for access to the outside. Waterproof vents are placed on the canopy to allow ventilation, or they can be closed. The canopy is designed with a truss structure to actually reinforce the pole structure; nonstretchable panels are used along the poles and side panels for added strength to hold the poles in place. UVX film is used for windows; it is non-yellowing and non-clouding. Stake out loops can accept skis and snow pickets. Inside, there are four mesh pockets. The package includes stuff sacks, and aluminum stakes.
The Mountain Hardwear's EV2 is a solid tent; it can be relied on to provide safety and security in the harshest weather conditions.
