Motorola T5950 Rechargeable GMRS 2-Way Radios

Date Published: 11/4/04

These compact, lightweight units are an excellent buy for families and outdoors enthusiasts. As is always the case with two-way radios, the makers do not advertise the true performance of the product. These units deliver over two miles of range in environments without significant obstructions (such as buildings or mountains). Within this range, reception is quite good, thanks to the 22 channels and 99 interference eliminator codes to keep your transmissions clear. As for battery life, these units are rechargeable and perform better than most radios, but unfortunately the batteries are NiCad, so they are subject to memory effect. One particular useful feature for hikers is that NOAA channels can be accessed for up-to-date weather reports. Other features include vox capabilities for hands-free transmissions, backlit LCDs, ten different call alerts (as well as a VibraCall alert) and keypad lock. Overall, this is a very good buy for a pair of well-constructed radios.
