Motorola SURFboard SB5120 cable modem

Date Published: 3/8/06

One of the best features of broadband connections such as cable and DSL is that they are always "on." If you want to look something up online, you don't have to wait for a dial-up connection to be established. Unfortunately, this can also be a risk factor. Having a wide-open connection to the internet without proper security can make you vulnerable to hackers and other nefarious online users.

While you can--and should--install firewall and antivirus software, you can also take some steps on the hardware side of things, such as with Motorola's SURFboard SB5120 cable modem. This modem has a stand-by switch on the top that can be pressed to easily disconnect the modem from the computer, thereby protecting it from the rest of the web when not in use. When you return, simply press the button again to reconnect it to the system.

In addition to this simple yet effective security measure, the SB5120 is an impressive broadband modem. It features DOCSIS 2.0 support, so you'll be able to get the fastest possible upload and download speeds from your service provider. The modem can handle up to 38Mbps downstream and 30Mbps upstream, so it's a great option if you're signed up for your ISP's premiere service with faster speeds. The SB5120 uses TurboDOX technology, a bandwidth optimization feature that some ISPs support that can further enhance the connection speed.

The SB5120 is easy to install. It offers both USB and Ethernet connections (and comes with the cables for both), so you can choose how to connect it to your PC. You can also use it as a bridge between your system and an Ethernet LAN, hooking the USB cable to your system and the Ethernet cable to a router. The modem stands upright to save desktop space, with the front panel illuminated by indicator lights to let you know that it's connected to your system and your ISP.

Motorola offers a respectable 2-year warranty on the SB5120. If you need a new cable modem for your broadband connection, the Motorola SURFboard SB5120 offers plenty of speed and added protection for your high-speed pipeline.

Pros:  USB or Ethernet, standby switch
Cons:  ISP may not support advanced features
