Motorola Motorizr Z3 Mobile Phone
Date Published: 2/26/08The Motorola Motorizr Z3 is a beautifully designed slider phone that offers quite a few features as well. As with its popular RAZR phone, a thin profile is the most prominent feature of the Motorizr. It's equipped with a stellar 262K-color LCD that displays web pages and text with excellent detail. Additionally, the minimal buttons and centrally located directional toggle, along with a well-designed menu interface, make operation of the phone extremely intuitive--and as the toggle is the central navigation tool, you don't have to open the phone to access most functions. Once you slide the cover, which is sturdy and can be done single handedly, the phone's keypad is revealed. The buttons well spaced and are easy to operate in the dark or while not looking. The weight of the phone is in the middle range for slider phones (3.9 ounces), but for some reason a little weight always adds to the attractiveness of candy-bar style phones.
A 2-megapixel camera is onboard with an 8x zoom and a flash, but despite the high pixel count, photos are rather unexceptional, particularly in regard to color accuracy. You can adjust numerous settings, though, so some of this can be painstakingly corrected. The quality of video is slightly better. Memory on the phone is 20MB, but you can use MicroSD cards up to 2GB in size for increased storage. Video length is limited only by how much space you have left on your card. Music can also be stored on the phone in numerous formats, and a unique feature, MotoMixer, allows you to create your own ring tones. These distinctive ringers can be used for your contacts, or you can also opt for a vibrating ring or a polyphonic one that comes preloaded. You can also assign pictures for visual notification.
Clarity for phone calls was quite good with the Motorizr Z3 with no static or interruptions to report. The speakerphone as well as the earpiece had good volume adjustability, but at higher levels the speakerphone became slightly distorted. Given the music capabilities, if you prefer to be hands-free you might want to opt for a wireless headset, as stereo Bluetooth is supported. Meanwhile, the battery life is impressive at about 6 hours of talk time and two weeks of standby. Other features include: voice recorder, voice dialing, mini USB, and a 1000-contact telephone directory.
Overall, design is paramount with the Motorizr Z3. If you like the sturdiness of slider phones and are looking for something striking, the Motorizr provides quite a few features and reliable service.
Pros: Exceptional LCD, stylish design, great ergonomics, good call clarity
Cons: Disappointing camera
