Mitsubishi's WS-55315 is a 55-inch widescreen rear-projection TV that is HD-ready, with twin tuners and full picture-in-picture options. The two-tone gray cabinet has front-panel inputs and controls located below the screen, as well as stereo speakers. A removable shield reduces glare and protects the screen from scratches.

The WS-55315 up-converts 480i signals to 480p, and high-definition signals are displayed at 1,080i. A motion-adaptive 3-D Y/C digital comb filter eliminates rainbow effects and dot crawl, ensuring the best possible picture even from analog sources. There is a choice of six picture formats when viewing analog content, while digital content can be viewed in either of two formats. Movies are automatically adapted to the video screen with 3:2 pulldown conversion, which smoothes out fast action sequences. The picture tubes can be aligned using the manual convergence system, with either a simple red and blue adjustment or a more complex 64-point adjustment. Colors can also be adjusted for each of the inputs, so preferences need not carry over from (for example) DVD to video games.

The internal audio system consists of twin 6-inch full-range stereo speakers producing a total of 20 watts of audio output. The audio can be set up to simulate surround sound, creating the illusion of speakers located all around the room, or it can simulate stereo if the current program is only in mono. The picture-in-picture on the WS-55315 can produce a split screen with two full-height pictures, a single picture-in-picture window, or multiple windows.

This TV has an array of connectivity options, with front-panel audio/video/S-video inputs for quick access when temporarily connecting a video game console or camcorder. The rear panel features two RF inputs, two audio/video/S-video inputs, two sets of component video inputs, a DTV component video input complete with stereo audio for use with digital sources, a DVI input, and an RS-232C for linking to other components. An RF output and fixed/variable audio output are also provided on the rear panel. The universal remote control is contoured for comfortable handling.
