Mitsubishi WD-73734 1080p DLP HDTV

Date Published: 10/9/07

Looking for a movie-theater experience at home? The WD-73734 1080p DLP HDTV features a massive 73-inch screen and several high-tech features designed to optimize every pixel of today's high-definition color and contrast. All it's missing is a bucket of fake-butter-drenched popcorn.

It doesn't come cheap, though--this model is Mitsubishi's second most expensive DLP TV. Obviously, when it comes to today's high-tech models, the larger the screen size, the higher the price tag. Good thing the WD-73734 comes with a package of impressive features: The color processing on this unit is exceptional. Mitsubishi uses a 6-Color Light Engine, which produces images in six separate colors instead of the traditional three. The addition of yellow, cyan and magenta adds extra punch to the way colors display, and results in realistic and bold images that look like the real thing. Heck, they almost look better than the real thing. When you compare this model's color side-by-side with other rear-screen models, the advantages of the 6-color system become even more obvious. Not only are whites much whiter than your average TV, blacks come across as contrast-heavy and crisp, not murky, dark gray sludge.

The sharp, color-rich picture is also a product of a nifty noise-reduction system that analyzes color and filters video noise, technology that pumps up the contrast and sharpens the edges of objects in a scene, as well as a system that lets the user individually adjust each of the six colors' tint.

It's all packed into a moderate-sized frame and compact cabinet, with a depth of 17.5 inches. Although that's much deeper than comparable LCD or plasma units, in the rear-projection world that's an efficient use of space any way you slice it--especially for a TV with such a huge screen size. The audio on this unit is just fine, but with the theater-sized screen on this model, you'll likely want to hook the TV up to your surround-sound system to really get the full effect.

Mitsubishi also includes three rear and one front HDMI 1.3 input, plus a USB input and three component inputs, so it's a breeze to attach everything from gaming consoles to cable boxes to Blu-ray or HD-DVD players. The WD-73734 has an intuitive on-screen interface, but the most convenient connectivity feature is EasyConnect, which automatically recognizes when you plug something into an input, then prompts you to assign it a name. It ignores any inputs you're not using, so the menu stays uncluttered and easy to maneuver around. The remote control is basic and very simple to master.

The financial investment on the Mitsubishi WD-73734 1080p DLP HDTV isn't exactly small change, but with the 73-inch screen and vibrant color and contrast, you may never have to buy a ticket to a movie at a theater again.

Pros: Huge screen; bold, accurate color; easy connectivity
Cons: Price; much deeper profile than LCD or plasma
