The enormous 73-inch wide-format DLP screen lets you know upfront that the Mitsubishi WD-73727 is serious about home theater. This HDTV relies on digital light processing technology to produce a rich 1,080p image, and it sports a built-in CableCARD slot to potentially eliminate a cable box, five memory card slots, and a host of connection options. Stereo speakers are located below the screen, along with a set of composite video and S-video inputs and an IEEE 1394 connection for use with a digital camcorder.

The WD-73727 presents a picture that is highly detailed and sharply focused, helped along by video noise reduction, edge enhancement, a six-way color adjustment system, and a bright 150-watt lamp. Twin analog tuners combine with the digital ATSC/QAM tuner to provide multiple picture-in-picture options for viewing two programs at once, and the WD-73727 also allows three-channel preview and a full-screen freeze. The four internal speakers are rated at 10 watts of audio output per channel, and the volume can be automatically maintained at a steady level, eliminating the difference between program and commercial volume.

Other useful features include an on-screen channel list, access to an 8-day interactive program guide, memory for audio/video and color temperature settings for each video input, and a choice of six picture formats for standard aspect ratio sources. The memory card reader can handle MP3 and WMA audio files as well as JPEG, so you can add an audio accompaniment to your digital photo slideshows.

A full range of components can be connected to the WD-73727 through the rear panel, which is home to a pair of RF inputs, two audio/video/S-video inputs, three component video inputs, two HDMI inputs with DVI stereo audio (one of which is compatible with VGA/XGA computer output), and two IEEE 1394 ports. There is also a coaxial digital audio output, a fixed stereo audio output, an independent record audio/video output, and two NetCommand/G-Link IR emitters for unifying control over other components through on-screen icons.
