Mitsubishi WD-65733 1080p DLP HDTV

Date Published: 10/29/07

You can find models that are less expensive than the Mitsubishi WD-65733 1080p DLP HDTV, but it's rare to come across one with this combination of features for the price. As long as you're okay with giving up a few of the higher-tech bells and whistles, this set is a bargain.

If you're looking for an as-big-as-it-gets screen, though, keep on shopping. This model's got a very respectable 65-inch screen, but it's still eight inches smaller than the largest model Mitsubishi manufactures. But with a smaller screen comes a smaller price tag, and that's this model's top selling point. (A similar-sized LCD set goes for twice the price.) Add to that the exceptional features and picture quality, and you'll see why Consumer Guide designated the Mitsubishi WD-65733 1080p DLP HDTV a Best Buy.

Digital Light Processing (DLP) TVs deliver an amazingly crisp picture, and the Mitsubishi WD-65733 1080p DLP HDTV is no exception. The system works by employing millions of microscopic mirrors to reflect a digital image onto the screen. The mirrors are mounted on teeny-tiny hinges, and flip on and off several thousands times a second.

Where traditional DLP TVs tend to fall short is when it comes to color. Early DLP displays were driven by a fairly rudimentary color wheel, which used three basic colors--green, blue and red--to generate all the colors in the spectrum. The result was a bit muddled, and the process caused some viewers to see an incredibly annoying rainbow during action scenes or when they moved their eyes quickly from one side of the screen to the other.

The Mitsubishi WD-65733 1080p DLP puts those issues to rest with an innovative 6-Color Light Engine. It uses green, blue and red, but also yellow, cyan and magenta to create a wider range of colors, brighter individual colors, and truer whites. We were impressed with the way this model delivers super-accurate color--put a real red Corvette next to a high-definition image displayed on this model, and you'd be hard pressed to determine which color looks more accurate.

While the color is spectacular, the blacks on this unit aren't as well defined as they could be. Mitsubishi equips some of its higher-end models with a dynamic iris system that increases the contrast and deepens the darks. That feature isn't available on the WD-65733, and the less-than-stellar contrast is one of the few compromises you'll need to live with on this model. Especially in dark scenes, the picture is a little murky and black images sometimes come across as very dark gray. Often times, it's barely noticeable. But if you're a picture purist, you might want to consider a higher-end unit.

Overall, the Mitsubishi WD-65733 1080p DLP HDTV is a nicely equipped model, particularly when it comes to color. While it's missing a few high-tech features standard on more expensive models, it's a value-packed, big-screen option.

Pros: Bold, accurate color; price; easy connectivity
Cons: Less impressive contrast and fewer features than higher-end models
