If you are looking for a big set that can stand alone and provide full HDTV from a cable or satellite source or a rooftop antenna, you are looking for the Mitsubishi's WD-62628
The WD-62628 is a 62-inch DLP TV with high-definition tuner and digital cable readiness built-in. The compact cabinet has a black frame surrounding the wide-format screen, with two pairs of stereo speakers tucked into the slim base but set apart from the screen by a line of silver trim.
The digital light processing engine provides a high level of detail, with clean edges and rich blacks. Resolution is 1,920X1,080, with up-conversion of 1,080i signals to 1,080p, exceeding the levels produced by most line-doubling approaches. Colors can be carefully calibrated using the six-segment color wheel, so the images on the screen appear very realistic.
The WD-62628 has four built-in speakers producing a total of 20 watts of output, and the audio can be set to simulate surround sound and automatically maintain a steady audio level.
The convenience features include six picture formats for 4:3 sources, two picture formats for 16:9 (widescreen) sources, an on-screen channel list, access to TV Guide On-Screen and memory for audio/video settings for each of the input sources, including two color temperature settings and two brightness modes.
Components can be managed on-screen through the NetCommand system, which employs icons to represent the various components of a home theater network. Twin tuners make it easy to watch two programs at once in split-screen mode or to use the other PIP features. The WD-62628 also has a channel preview function that displays programming options in three separate windows.
Users will definitely want to integrate the WD-62628 with a home theater system, and the TV has the jacks to accommodate just about any associated component. This set offers three audio/video/S-video inputs (one on the front panel), three component video inputs, two HDMI inputs with DVI stereo audio (one of which can be used as a computer input), three FireWire connectors (one front), an audio/video output dedicated to a recorder, a fixed stereo audio output and a coaxial digital audio output.
In addition, five card slots can handle eight different memory card formats, enabling users to display digital photos and even play MP3 and WMA audio files. The remote control fully illuminates, and it is compatible with a wide range of brands and component types.
If you are looking for a set to build your viewing around, the Mitsubishi WD-62628 will be a fine hub of a home theater system.
