Mitsubishi WD-62531 62-Inch LCD Projection HDTV
Date Published: 4/28/08
LCD projection sets have taken a backseat to DLP and the assortment of LCoS variations, but models like the Mitsubishi WD-62531 demonstrate that LCD projection is still a viable format. While it can't equal the 1,080p resolutions delivered by other microdisplay projection televisions, this 62-inch HDTV nevertheless produces a sharp picture in a stylish cabinet.
All signals are presented at the WD-62531's native resolution of 720p, and an enhanced 132-watt backlight ensures a bright picture. An inherent problem with LCD projection is poor black levels, but Mitsubishi employs a dynamic light aperture system called SmartShutter that improves black levels and shadow detail by reducing the amount of light that reaches the LCD during dark scenes. Other picture-enhancement functions include video noise reduction and a six-way color management system. The overall result is a clear and realistic high-definition picture, but there is a noticeable difference between the WD-62531 and the vivid, ultra-detailed performance of some of the 1,080p microdisplay competitors.
Internal ATSC and QAM tuners potentially eliminate the need for external set-top boxes, although the lack of a CableCARD slot means you will still need a box for interactive and premium cable services. The WD-62531 has a split-screen (POP) function, but a second video source is required to enable it. Convenience options include eight total picture format options, memory for the audio and video settings for each input and an adjustable sleep timer. The packaged universal remote is partially illuminated and can operate up to five associated components.
The WD-62531's full-range stereo speakers are placed below the screen, which contributes to this set's relatively small footprint. The speakers produce a basic 10 watts per channel of output, and the WD-62531 includes the standard simulated surround sound and automatic volume leveling.
This HDTV has a front-panel composite video/S-video input for quickly connecting a camcorder or other occasional component, but most of the inputs and outputs are located in the rear. Connectivity is more limited on this model than on some competing models, with a pair of RF inputs, a pair of HDMI inputs, another two composite video/S-video inputs, two component video inputs, a composite video output and a coaxial digital audio output. Mitsubishi's handy ClearThought Easy Connect system automatically identifies when a component is linked, prompting you to name the new device. In addition, only inputs with connected components are displayed in the on-screen menu.
Overall, the Mitsubishi WD-62531 is a solid HDTV, but if you desire top performance or a long list of advanced features, you should probably continue shopping.
Pros: Two RF inputs and two HDMI inputs, ClearThought Easy Connect makes linking associated components a simple task
Cons: No PC input, no CableCARD slot, can't match the performance of 1,080p microdisplay models
