Mitsubishi WD-57733 733 Series 57-inch DLP HDTV
Date Published: 7/31/07
Mitsubishi's 57-inch WD-57733 offers a large viewing area that won't overwhelm your living space. This slimmed down model is just a tad over a foot deep, and at just about 62 pounds this set seems to have shed the extra weight that's typical of a DLP set until recently.
That's not to say that this set comes up short on features, however. In fact, this 1080p set utilizes Mitsubishi's 6-color light engine technology, which includes Color 4D video noise reduction and four pre-set video modes to ensure that you get a good picture out of the box that is free of noise and offers clean, clear colors. A/V adjustments and color temperature controls are memorized by input, so you won't have to worry about needing to continually tweak the set when you change video sources. There are picture form modes for both 4:3 and 16:9 sources, while concerns such as static image retention or other ghosting issues will not affect this set.
The WD-57733 also offers x.v.Color support, but at this point it's almost more marketing hype than something you're actually likely to take advantage of, as very few sources yet support it. Sony has introduced a rather affordable Blu-ray player with x.v.Color, but that's about it at this point. It's nice to know you have this should there be a need in the future, but it adds little to the viewing experience, for now. Until there is word that others may adopt the technology, it is something you can easily live without.
What did impress us more, and are likely to be of use, are the plethora of connections that the WD-57733 provides. Mitsubishi's Easy Connect makes set up a snap, but more experienced videophiles will want to make sure the right connections are made, and again, there is no shortage with this set. There are three rear HDMI 1.3 inputs, two rear component inputs with stereo connections, as well as an additional front component video input. A front USB input is also provided for use with up to 5 megapixel photos. The set also includes dual S-Video/composite video and stereo inputs, and an analog stereo audio output. Additionally, the Dolby Digital/PCM coaxial audio output is a nice addition if you are using a lot of HD devices such as set top boxes, Blu-ray or HD-DVD players, all of which might be fighting over the limited digital inputs on your audio receiver.
The screen is bordered in black, and the compact design of the casing includes a bottom speaker that doesn't detract from the overall sleek appearance of this set. The twin internal speakers provide a full stereo range with 10 watts of power each. The partially illuminated multibrand remote control is easy to program and it supports up to five devices, including DVD players and cable set top boxes.
Connectivity seems to be the key reason to consider Mitsubishi's WD-57733 set. While a 57-inch TV could overpower many smaller rooms especially when you're not viewing it, this one is sleek enough that you'll appreciate it when it's on, but the room won't feel hogged or intruded upon otherwise.
Pros: Front USB input, 3 rear HDMI inputs, 6-color light engine
Cons: x.v.Color mostly hype at this stage
