The mid-size White Star S314 powerhead canister is a value-priced model in the German-made Miele line of White Star models. An excellent vacuum, this unit comes with some very high quality tools, a crush-proof hose, and metal extension wands.

It differs from the basic S314 in that it is packed with a turbo-brush and not a true powerhead. This system is appropriate only for low-pile carpeting and area rugs.

Preferred by many allergy sufferers for its active HEPA filtration, this unit captures allergy-triggering dust mites and their feces. One of a number of Miele models, this one is specifically designed for smaller homes and apartments with bare floors, mostly low pile rugs, and upholstery.

Unfortunately, many Americans have homes filled with wall-to-wall deep pile carpeting that does not respond well to this model. An option is to purchase a power nozzle or a more expensive model with a powerhead, such as the Miele Red Star, in order to get satisfactory results. However, if your thickest floor covering is a looped area rug or oriental carpet, you may want to consider this outstanding and reasonably priced model.

On the plus side, the White Star S314 has easy-to-use onboard tools, including a desirable natural bristle dusting brush. Lightweight, this unit is easy to lift and also maneuvers well around furniture without tipping, thanks to the swivel feature. Convenient to store, it has a handy park feature that prevents the wand from falling over. Easy to adjust to your carpets, furniture, curtains, and upholstery, this model has six speeds to choose from, although they are mounted on the canister and not on the more convenient wand.

Unlike many newer models, the White Star S314 requires the purchase of replacement bags. Although this feature may be inconvenient, the bags do a better job of filtering particles than the systems in bagless models. On Miele models you'll also find a system that seals the bags to prevent dust from escaping when bags are changed.
