Miele Mini Upright S163 stick and broom vac
Date Published: 4/13/06
The least expensive model in Miele's upscale line of stick vacs, the S163 still commands a lot of cash. In exchange for your money you get a well-built, electric broom that does an excellent job of moving from hard floors to low pile carpet surfaces. With a powerful 1000-watt motor and 96 cfm of airflow, this model has some serious suction. What it lacks is the convenient telescopic handle of its even higher priced siblings.
On the plus side, the S163 offers Miele's three-part particle Super Air Clean System. This system utilizes a two-layer dustbag, a pre-motor filter, and an electro-static filter for maximum particle capture of 99.97 percent of particles as small as .03 microns. For this reason, it is a favorite of allergy sufferers. Two speeds provide sufficient variety to adequately clean most surfaces and lower the suction power for more delicate tasks. Two tools are included and are appropriate for cleaning upholstery and hard-to-reach crevices. The quick-release cord measures 26 feet and is of sufficient length for most typical uses.
While many manufacturers are moving away from bags, Miele persists in offering bagged models. Many people find it an inconvenience to frequently change bags; however, these bagged models are often preferred by those concerned with particle capture. The S143 is popular with urban apartment dwellers and in some cases is the one and only vacuum in the home. If your home is on the larger side and has any high pile carpeting, select this model only as a high-priced supplement to a decent vacuum cleaner.
Pro: well built, lots of suction, two speeds, on/off brushroll switch
Con: requires bags, very expensive
