Miele Cat and Dog Canister Vacuum S516

One look at the Miele Cat and Dog Canister Vacuum S516 and one word comes to mind: Ouch.
With an $800 price tag, the Miele has a lot to prove. We were anxious to discover if it really performed as well on dog and cat hair as its marketing materials indicated. We were not disappointed. The main nozzle loosens and removes pet hair. It also easily removed other debris, ranging from large particles like sand to small particles like dust. For problem pet hair, especially in areas where a dog or cat likes to spend a lot of time, we found the turbo brush (included) was particularly helpful. This tool really works pet hair loose and then lifts it from carpets and upholstery. Other tools, including a crevice tool, dusting brush and upholstery tool, nest on the side of the vacuum. These tools are standard fare and worked as well as expected.
The Miele's main nozzle is connected to the canister via a metal wand and flexible hose. The wand is the telescoping variety, which is a nice touch, and makes it easier to reach hard-to-clean spots -- like ceiling corners. The canister has a slim, upright design and is easy to maneuver. It occasionally tipped when we pulled the hose with too much vigor. This was a disappointment. There are other models that cost far less yet are more well balanced. We do like the Miele's variable suction; it can be adjusted with a turn of a dial. It also has an indicator light that alerts the user when it's time to change the bag. The power cord is longer than some canister models we've tested and retracts automatically. No more wasted moments spent winding an unwieldy cord. The Miele operates quietly.
One of the Miele's standout features, however, isn't readily apparent. The canister has a sealed filter system that includes a charcoal filter. Why is this important? A charcoal filter traps odors and if you live with pets, a vacuum that traps odors is a bonus. Home air purifiers often incorporate carbon filters, as well as filters to trap dust and allergens. Likewise, the Miele canister vacuum uses carbon and allergen filters to help rid carpets of allergens and odors. During our testing, we were pleased to note that these filters really seemed to make a difference. Overall, we give the Miele high marks for performance. If you have pet hair issues -- and a sizeable budget -- then the Miele Cat and Dog Canister Vacuum S516 is a useful cleaning tool.
