Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows

Date Published: 2/21/08

The Xbox 360 console has built in support for wireless controllers. Why then, you may ask, would you want to get a controller with a cord? Well, to have a wired controller that works with not only with your new console but your Windows XP computer would be a good answer.

The Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows features a USB cable that will plug into both your Xbox 360 and your PC's USB port, providing a seamless transition between the feel of PC and console gaming when you use the same controller for both. The nine-foot cable features a "break away" connector that separates the cord if you trip over it (rather than damaging your console or PC's port) and offers plenty of lead to stretch out during gaming.

The best part of this controller is the way it feels: It's lightweight, well contoured, and all the buttons are in the right place. Whether you're playing Halo 2 or Halo PC, you know what to hit to reload your weapon or switch grenades. Of course, most PC shooter fans won't be giving up their mouse and keyboard combination for this controller, but it works extremely well for sports and flight simulator games for the PC.

The layout is similar to the smaller S-controller for Xbox (although it comes in stark white to match the 360). There are two analog sticks, an eight-way D-pad, and the four colored buttons on the front. The white and black buttons have become more useful shoulder buttons, and the triggers are just where they should be.

Inside the controller, there are twin force feedback motors that provide rumble effects for any games that support it. The controller features a port for a headset, and you can use any Xbox Live headset or any cell phone headset (though it's not recommended) with both the 360 and your PC, letting you add voice chat to all of your favorite games.

A driver disk for Windows can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site. You'll need Windows XP to run the controller, however.

The Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows retails for around $40--the same price as a normal wired Xbox 360 controller--and gives you game control on your PC as well as your new 360.

Pro: Light and comfortable, long cord with breakaway connector.
Con: Need Windows XP.
