Microsoft Starck Optical Mouse

Date Published: 6/9/06

It's rare that an input device from a manufacturer other than Apple would be called "art," but that's a fair assessment of the unique new Microsoft optical mouse created by renowned architect/designer Philippe Starck. Starck has redesigned other mundane household items from toothbrushes to tape dispensers, and he's definitely changed the way we look at input devices. The Starck Optical Mouse doesn't feature a lot of advanced functionality, but it is one of the most handsome mice we've ever had traipsing across our desktop.

When you plug in the USB mouse, it lights up with a colored band down the middle that cleverly disguises the scroll wheel and neatly dissects the mouse into two silver halves. These halves are intended to represent the symmetry of the human brain with the lighted strip representing life. Available with the "life strip" in either blue or orange, the mouse definitely has a futuristic look to it.

However, that light means that the Starck Optical Mouse must be plugged into your PC directly, so there aren't any plans for a wireless version. There also isn't any Tilt Wheel Technology built into the mouse, and it only features the standard left and right buttons for clicking (as well as depressing the scroll wheel for a third button).

Despite its lack of functionality, the mouse is surprisingly comfortable in the palm of the hand, and it slides smoothly across any flat surface or mouse pad. You also handle the left and right clicking with the palm of your hand instead of fingers. While this takes a bit of getting used to, it's actually quite intuitive and comfortable, especially for web browsing.

The mouse fits nicely into either hand, making it a great input device for left-handers or ambidextrous users. The Starck Optical Mouse retails for $35, but we were able to find it for $15. That's not a bad price for a mid-tier optical mouse, and it's a great price for one with such stylish flair.

If you're looking to do something a little different on your desktop, the Microsoft Starck Optical Mouse distinctly stands out from the mainstream breeds of PC rodents.

Pro: Great price, very stylish.
Con: No advanced functionality.
