Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000
Date Published: 3/2/07
When it comes to ergonomic input devices, Microsoft has always been a reliable manufacturer. That's why the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 has to live up to a lot of hype. Luckily, this curvaceous and comfortable keyboard has no problem holding its own against any ergonomic input device out there.
The broad, cushioned wrist rest offers plenty of support for both hands while typing, and you can place your entire palm on the wrist rest for an even healthier typing angle. The 4000 comes with a palm lift that snaps in beneath the wrist rest, giving you a downward-sloping typing surface. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's surprisingly comfortable once you adjust.
The 4000 also boasts many advanced features you don't often find in a keyboard. The handy Zoom Slider in the middle of the split keys lets you zoom in and out of documents and digital images. Since it is right there at your thumb-tips, you'll find yourself using it quite often.
Other convenient keys include the back and forward buttons below the spacebar that let you not only maneuver through websites, but also in and out of folders on your desktop. The 4000 wouldn't be a Microsoft keyboard without a large collection of customizable buttons, including five My Favorite Keys that can be programmed just by holding them down, a la your car stereo's station presets. The whole row of enhanced function keys can be customized, so you've got plenty of programmable options.
The 4000 is wired-only, but that means you don't have to worry about replacing batteries. It retails for $65, but we were able to find it for under $40 from some vendors, so be sure to shop around.
As with any ergonomic keyboard, user preference definitely comes into play. If you don't like split-key designs and tilted angles for your typing, you should steer clear of the 4000. However, if you're looking for a keyboard to help you avoid repetitive strain injury, the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is one of the most comfortable keyboards we've ever used.
Pros: Very comfortable, wrist rest and palm lift, multiple programmable buttons
Cons: Split-key design not for everyone
