Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000
Date Published: 5/24/07
The LifeCam NX-6000 is a high-end notebook webcam that offers sharp resolution and integration into Microsoft's Live Messenger application, all in a very portable package.
The NX-6000's lens slides inside its frame during transport, and the device and its USB cord fit snugly into the included carrying case. The case itself is only about the size of a large Dixie cup, so it's a great webcam to take along for videoconferencing or chatting on the road.
But don't let the small size fool you, as Microsoft has built some sharp resolution into the NX-6000. Video of up to 2.0 megapixels allows for extremely detailed images, while stills can be captured at up to an interpolated 7.6 megapixels. The built-in microphone completes the package, so you don't have to carry a headset with you.
Installing the webcam takes only a few minutes. About the size of a pack of chewing gum, the NX-6000 clips firmly atop a laptop screen, and the roughly 2-foot USB cable is long enough to reach a USB port without having coils of extra cord left over.
The installation CD includes the LifeCam Dashboard interface, and it prompts you to download the latest version of Microsoft's Live Messenger. You don't have to use the NX-6000 with Live Messenger, but you'll get the most from it if you do. For example, the Easy Call button on top of the NX-6000 lets you quickly make a video call to one of your Live Messenger contacts.
The Dashboard includes the controls for the camera, such as pan, tilt and zoom. You can also use the built-in face tracking function and the NX-6000 will always keep your face in frame, so there's no need to bother with the controls during a video chat. The Dashboard offers video effects such as snow and rain, as well as other graphics that appear on the screen with you. If you use Microsoft's Live Spaces for blogging, you can snap pictures with the NX-6000 and upload them directly to your blog by clicking an icon on the Dashboard.
The NX-6000 has a suggested price of $100, although we found it at multiple vendors for less than $80. There are less-expensive notebook webcams on the market, but you won't find any with the same high resolution and excellent portability as the Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000.
