Micro Logic Info Select 8.0
Date Published: 5/12/08
This version of Info Select continues its best feature--the ability to organize whatever kind of information you come across during your daily life at work or at home, from interesting web sites to business projects to the name of a trusted auto mechanic.
If you are used to managing information on your computer with files and folders, or with standard to-do lists and calendar programs, Info Select might seem confusing and even overwhelming. But its idiosyncratic approach to managing disparate pieces of information includes two essential elements--speed and flexibility.
Info Select arranges information as topics in an outline list. You can quickly add items and sub-items into your outline of topics, and arrange them in a way that makes sense to you. Topics can be a single line of text, a web site address, a simple database, an image--the types of information you can organize are nearly endless. But don't worry about your appointments getting lost. Info Select includes powerful search features to make it easy (and fast) to find what you're looking for.
One of the best features of Info Select is its support for moving information back and forth from other programs. Highlight the information you want to capture, click on the blue lightning bolt in your Windows system tray, and the program creates a topic or note to hold the information. This is a great way to save snatches of text from the web or documents. Info Select has built-in e-mail support so you can send your message from within the program. Other web-savvy tools include a mini web browser and support for Internet newsgroups. The program's image editor is suitable for simple fixes to photos and other image files.
Info Select is quick and flexible, but it isn't perfect. Printing calendar items is confusing; for example, to print a daily schedule you have to select the day in the month-display view rather then just printing the daily display. The commands and functions in the built-in spreadsheet program aren't located where most spreadsheet users would expect them.
There's no real priority-driven to-do list feature, only a simple text template for listing tasks. The tickler system is easy to set up but reminders are difficult to edit or turn off. And finally, the Micro Logic Info Select 8.0 is expensive--although you can buy a year's subscription to it for under $50 if you want to see if it suits your needs.
Pros: Excellent Internet tools, fast information storage and retrieval
Cons: The outline-like layout can be hard to get used to, expensive
