Meade ETX-80AT-TC telescope
Date Published: 12/13/06
The ETX-80AT-TC is the latest in Meade's line of small Go To computerized telescopes. At about 10 pounds, the ETX-80AT-TC is simple to set up and a great choice for a grab-and-go scope.
The ETX-80AT-TC is an 80mm (3.15 inches) refractor telescope with a relatively short barrel length of 14.5 inches. Short refractors exhibit a wide field of view, making them good candidates for deep space rich field viewing as well as planetary astronomy. In addition, the ETX-80AT-TC works well for terrestrial viewing. Focus as close as 17 feet makes this model an ideal choice for viewing wildlife from your deck.
The Meade ETX-80AT-TC uses an Alt/Az orientation on a sturdy double-tine mount. The tripod (sold separately) has an accessory tray for storing eyepieces and other goodies. The ETX-80AT-TC can also be used in a polar mount configuration, although this would require either a different tripod or an optional tripod wedge.
The computer control makes the setup and alignment process quick and easy. Alignment is performed by entering your location into the computer's handheld controller. The computer will then orient the scope on the first of two well-known celestial objects, and ask you to fine-tune the orientation by manually slewing the scope to center the object in view. The procedure is repeated for a second object. Once alignment is accomplished, you're ready to view the universe.
The ETX-80AT-TC's AutoStar computer control isn't limited to setup and alignment. Where it really shines is in taking you on a tour of the wonders of the night sky. The AutoStar's guided tours include Tonight's Best, which will show you the most interesting objects currently visible from your location. You can also use AutoStar to make a selection from a catalog of over 10,000 celestial objects, including earth-orbiting satellites. All objects are just a few menu button pushes away from viewing with the AutoStar controller.
The ETX-80AT-TC computerized telescope offers a number of attractive features, as well as excellent viewing capabilities.
Pros: Multi-use astronomical as well as terrestrial scope, lightweight and simple to set up, easy to take with you at a moment's notice, AutoStar computer and hand controller are easy to use, guided tours are nice for individuals who are new to astronomy
Cons: Wide field of view is poor for some planetary objects, focusing knob is vertical and takes some getting used to
