If you're looking for a fully-featured mid-size cabinet-depth refrigerator in the French door configuration, you'll feel like you've won the lottery when you see the Maytag MFC2061HEW. Its price is somewhat steep when you consider that it's a medium-capacity unit, but if you want an energy-efficient bottom-freezer fridge and need a cabinet-depth model, you may be willing to part with the extra money.

The MFC2061HEW is a medium-sized model with a long list of great convenience and performance features and the quality feel and stylish look that we associate with Maytag appliances. This unit is one of the very few cabinet-depth refrigerators on the market that is not only a bottom-freezer, but a French door model as well. This makes the MFC2061HEW especially well suited to upscale kitchens where space is tight and it would be otherwise difficult to open full-width refrigerator doors.

Just about every feature you might imagine is included in the MFC2061HEW. The internal water dispenser that runs water through an integral filter is noteworthy; the PuriClean II retractable filter has an extraordinarily long life, lasting for approximately one year or 750 gallons. The MFC2061HEW also has a sophisticated cooling system, so you can be assured that it's chilling your fresh and frozen foods to your specifications. The Electronic Triple Cool system uses sensors in the fridge, freezer and even outside the unit to automatically monitor and adjust the internal temperature. This model also uses a fan to circulate cool air throughout both compartments.

For all its performance features, though, the MFC2061HEW is surprisingly energy-efficient; it exceeds federal energy standards for this type of appliance by 20 percent. It uses just 480 kWh of electricity each year, so you can expect to pay only about $45 to run it annually.

The MFC2061HEW has 14.4 cubic feet of space in the fresh foods area and 5.4 cubic feet of space in the freezer. Easy-to-use electronic temperature controls are located at the top-front of the main compartment. Because the water dispenser is inside the main compartment and not through the door, interior space is maximized.

The left door has three pick-off gallon-sized bins; the right door has two gallon-sized adjustable bins and a removable dairy keeper. The main compartment features three half-width adjustable glass shelves with a spill-saver feature; the shelves roll out easily for unfettered access to foods in the back of the refrigerator. The MFC2061HEW also has two clear humidity-controlled crisper drawers and a great full-width deli drawer. An egg caddy is also included. We would, however, have liked to see a can rack or wine/bottle rack in this model.

The freezer of the MFC2061HEW pulls out like a drawer, making it convenient for smaller kitchens. The freezer has a top and bottom white wire basket and includes an automatic icemaker and ice bin.

The MFC2061HEW comes in a choice of white, black and stainless steel.

While its price is slightly high compared with similarly sized models, the MFC2061HEW may be well worth the extra cost for those who need or want this particular type of refrigerator.
