Maytag EPICz Front Load Dryer MEDZ600T / MGDZ600T

Date Published: 3/13/08

If the Maytag EPICz Front Load Dryer MEDZ600T (electric)/MGDZ600T (gas) reminds you of the popular Duet models from Whirlpool, it's no accident. This new Maytag dryer is the re-labeled version of parent company Whirlpool's lesser-priced Duet -- the Sport model.

The EPICz, like the Whirlpool Sport model, differs from the regular Whirlpool Duet and Maytag Epic dryers in three major ways -- suspension, capacity and price. Equipped with a more stable suspension than the original Duets, the EPICz are designed to produce limited vibration when used in an upstairs location. Although the potential to vibrate and travel is more of an issue with washers than dryers, both units in the matched pairs have been equipped with the upgraded suspension feature known as Smooth Balance. If you intend to place your new laundry pair upstairs, we highly recommend you opt for the EPICz, not the regular Epic.

The tradeoff for the re-designed suspension system is the capacity. In order to accommodate the components needed for better suspension, some interior space had to be eliminated. The capacity on the EPICz is 6.7 cubic feet versus 7.0 for the full-size model. In reality, the difference in size is so minimal that we doubt you'll even notice. If floor vibration is a potential issue for your installation, by all means choose this model over the slightly larger one.

The good news about the Maytag EPICz is the price. Unlike many models with upgraded features, this one actually sells for less than the full 7.0-cubic-foot model. Like most of the newer-design dryers, this Maytag EPICz comes equipped with our favorite feature -- the IntelliDry sensor. The best thing to happen to dryers since their invention, the sensor prevents just about all the damage to clothing we've ever complained about. With a sensor-equipped dryer like this one, you can all but eliminate shrinkage, melting, drying and stiffening of fabrics. You'll also never need to damp dry items again to protect them unless you so choose.

Since EPICz is in essence a Whirlpool product, we suggest you compare these two brands and select the model with the most attractive price. You'll find EPICz in both gas and electric models -- MEDZ600T is electric and MGDZ600T is gas. Regardless of the fuel you require, they are offered in white, black or a pleasant Arctic Blue that makes a great design statement.

Pros: Offers Smooth Balance suspension for upstairs installations, beats the price of the 7.0 cubic foot model
Cons: Slightly less capacity than the largest (7.0 cubic foot) model
