After some serious missteps, Maytag is back to selling reliable front-load washing machines in its new Epic line. Incredibly similar to the successful Whirlpool Duet and KitchenAid Ensemble models, the new Epics borrow plenty from these earlier models. All this is not surprising, since the three brands are now all produced by parent company Whirlpool.

The Epic MFW9700S is estimated to use a bit more electricity than its sibling, the MFW9600S. Its energy rating is 311 kWh/yr, while the MFW9600S is anticipated to use 287 kWh/yr. The difference is primarily the maximum spin speed. The MFW9700S has a higher maximum spin speed of 1200 rpm, while the MFW9600S maxes out at 1000 rpm. What this means to you is that the MFW9700S is capable of removing more water from your clothing so you can spend less time drying them. While convenient for speeding up the drying of sheets, towels and other durable items, using such a high-spin speed is not recommended for more delicate fabrics.

A second consideration is suspension. The MFW9700S employs a more stable suspension system. It is less prone to vibration and therefore a quieter model. In the Maytag line, this refers to QuietSeries 300 and QuietSeries 400. This Epic model MFW9700S uses QuietSeries 400, which is the more stable and quieter of the two designs.

The final big difference in the models in the Epic line is the exterior cabinet. This model, the Epic MFW9700S, sports a porcelain-on-steel exterior, while the MFW9600S sibling is clad only in a painted steel cabinet.

Other than these differences there is very little that distinguishes one Epic model from the other. Both models have a tilted basket for easy loading and can be purchased with an optional pedestal to raise the height. Each model is considered to be an HE (high efficiency) unit and has earned a federal Energy Star rating. Both models also offer automatic temperature selection, a built-in heater, automated sensor controlled cycles, suds reduction and a time-release shower system for water. When comparing these models to Whirlpool's Duets, you'll want to know that these Maytag units lack the delay start timer that's included on some of the other models.

Lastly, this Maytag model, the Epic MFW9700S is offered in two colors -- black and white, while little sister MFW9600S comes in white only. As high efficiency laundry goes, this Maytag model is a solid contender that should be considered against the current price and availability of the other Whirlpool produced models, such as the Duet series and the HE models bearing the Kenmore label.
