Maytag Epic Dryer MED9700S (electric)/MGD9700S (gas)
Date Published: 4/30/07
Like most dryers, Maytag's Epic MED9700S (electric)/MGD9700S (gas) plays second fiddle to its better half, the attention-grabbing, high-efficiency Epic washer MFW9700S. Nonetheless, Epic is fine, although expensive for the features it offers.
Dryers that match high-efficiency washers are all somewhat bloated in price. Manufacturers struggle to find ways to differentiate these new dryers, which are fairly simple in technology, from the conventional and lower priced models. What is offered on the MED9700S/MGD9700S is fairly typical of what you'll see in the industry. And what you're likely to see is the super-sized capacity found on this model. Big enough to handle even your king-size comforter, this model can handle the bulk of what the Epic washer puts out.
A sensor is yet another category-typical feature that is found on this Epic. The sensor adds somewhat to the cost of the dryer and works to measure the wetness/dryness of fabrics. Monitoring moisture and ending cycles before overdrying is a good way to prevent the fabric damage that is common in dryers.
Incredibly similar to the successful Whirlpool Duet and Kenmore HE models, the new Epics borrow plenty from these other dryers. All this is not surprising, since all three of these dryers are produced by parent company Whirlpool. For price comparison purposes, you may want to include these other models in your dryer search.
Like the Maytag Epic washers, the Epic dryers come in two versions. This model, the 9700, is the more expensive of the two. Priced $100-$150 more than the 9600, the differences are slight. The MED9700S/MGD9700S has a scratch-resistant heavy porcelain enamel finish on its top, while the less expensive model offers a simple painted steel top. The second difference is the sound dampening package. On this Epic, you'll find the QuietSeries 400 -- which is a quieter, more substantial insulation material. In all other areas, the two Epic dryers are indistinguishable.
Half of a well-built pair, the Maytag Epic Dryer has a successful track record in the form of Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Sears models. For this reason, we're confident in recommending these models -- the MED9700S in electric and MGD9700S in gas.
Pros: Spacious capacity, scratch resistant top, additional insulation, sensor
Cons: Expensive
