Maytag Atlantis Dryer MDG6400 (gas)/MDE6400 (electric)

Date Published: 6/24/08

The Maytag Atlantis dryers MDG6400 (Gas) and MDE6400 (electric) are moderately priced models that you can count on. With a pleasing, although not particularly innovative design, they're also good looking enough for even the finest of homes.

Built with quality parts, these models can be expected to perform well for a long time. The capacities are extra-large and appropriate for the needs of a growing family. We also like the GentleBreeze drying system that employs a powerful airflow at the same time it offers gentle, lower temperatures. Even better, the MDG6400/MDE6400 features adjustable levels of dryness. Controlling dryness levels in this manner allows you to dry durable items quickly and completely, while leaving some moisture in more delicate and damage-prone items.

Six cycles provide more than enough options and work well for drying permanent press clothing, delicate fabrics and even assisting in wrinkle removal. Four temperature settings give you far more control and flexibility than you'll find on the cheaper models equipped with just 1 or 2 options.

We also find the MDG6400/MDE6400 to be a better looking model than some of its similarly priced competitors. The exterior design and trim is attractive and has a quality look that is lacking from many similarly priced models.

Maytag may have had its problems with the original Neptune models, but that hasn't affected our high opinion of the Maytag Atlantis line and models MDG6400/ MDE6400 for their proven track records of reliability.

Pros: Moderately priced, reliable models with attractive design features
Cons: Maytag's image has suffered due to problems with original Neptune washers
