Marantz SR5002 Receiver

Date Published: 6/17/08

Combining high quality amplification and the latest in digital signal processing, the Marantz SR5002 should be a receiver to consider for those looking to make the leap into surround sound or replace their outdated two-channel stereo or obsolete component.

The SR5002 is priced right in line with other receivers in this class, and should serve those well looking to break into surround sound with a quality, high-powered receiver. With features such as HDMI V1.3 Switching and HDMI V1.1 repeating, multi-channel (7.1) LPCM via HDMI, and video up-conversion over component video, this receiver is perfect for those with a mix of both older and newer equipment they need to connect. Packed with a plethora of inputs and outputs, there is almost nothing you can't attach to this receiver.

In keeping true to Marantz tradition, this receiver is no slouch when it comes to its amplifier section. The SR5002 is conservatively rated at 90 watts and has all discrete amplifier stages. Weighing in at 27.1 pounds, this is a pretty hefty and well-built piece of equipment. Standard features include 192kHz/24-bit processing on all channels, 32-bit DSP by Cirus Logic, and a full array of the standard DTS and Dolby Digital processingm including Dolby headphone 2. The receiver also handles HDCD decoding, Circle Surround II, is XM-ready and comes with Marantz' M.R.A.C. auto calibration.

As we mentioned, the SR5002's HDMI features are capable of handling v1.3 switching and v1.1 repeating, and there is video up-conversion to the component video output. Eight multi-channel input and eight-channel preamplifier outputs make this receiver compatible with any foreseeable source components. The receiver also supports eight channels of LPCM over HDMI, playing back any Blu-ray disc we threw at it. A digital audio delay lip-sync feature for correcting out of sync sound and picture issues is also included. The SR5002 features multi-room audio, video and speaker outputs, along some high-end audio features such as source direct and the ability to turn off video circuits when listening to audio only. We thought those were helpful inclusions, especially for discriminating listeners who prefer their music clean and natural.

Once configured, the receiver performed flawlessly. While Marantz does not have the best GUI interface for setting up the receiver, it is straightforward, easy to use, and the M.R.A.C. auto calibration was as accurate as any we have tested in this class. There is a lot of competition at this price, but the Marantz SR5002 is a high quality piece with a solid list of features, and it should be on your short list if you are in need of a new home theater receiver.

Pros: Excellent audio quality, pre outs, 7.1 LPCM via HDMI.
Cons: No native Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio decoding.
