For the sophisticated home theater enthusiast, a single universal remote like the Marantz RC9500 is essential. While quite expensive, this remote control is handily equipped to simplify the often vast complexities inherent in multiple-device home theater systems.

The RC9500 has a rounded base that is comfortable to hold, and it is attractively designed in black with metallic gray accents. The unit is centered on a large 2-1/2X3-inch color touchscreen that displays rich and easy-to-read graphics. A docking station is included for recharging the remote, which can operate for up to 8 hours per charge with its included NiMH battery.

Software for programming the RC9500 via a PC is provided, and it works remarkably well. A mini-USB input provides the connection needed for linking to a computer. Users simply replicate home theater components' various remotes through the software and create macros that link the various components, with each macro composed of up to 250 commands. With the help of macros, users can press the view button, then select the viewing device (TV, DVD, A/V receiver, satellite receiver, etc.) and have the necessary components activate automatically.

Thanks to internal motion sensors, the screen and buttons illuminate whenever the remote is picked up. The RC9500 is both IR- and RF-capable, and it can operate at a distance of up to 33 feet for IR and 66 feet for RF. An optional range extender (Marantz RX-77) is available for added distance. The internal memory is 16MB (expandable up to 48MB with Marantz's Future Firmware Update), so there is room to customize the screen for each member of the household using themes downloadable from the internet. The price is steep, but there is virtually nothing the RC9500 can't do.
