Magellan Triton 2000

Date Published: 3/14/08

Magellan's Triton 2000 is the upper-echelon model in its new handheld GPS device series, and the 2000 really does have everything you could possibly want in a GPS device that still fits comfortably into your pocket.

For starters, there's the 2-7/10-inch color screen that gives you an ample view of the interface, maps, and compass feature that are a part of all the devices in the line. The 2000 also features a built-in barometer that keeps you on top of any weather changes if you're out on the trail for an extended period of time. Meanwhile, the touchscreen display makes it easy to move from one menu to another instead of having to just use a keypad.

And that's just getting started on the 2000. There's an integrated microphone and speaker for recording messages that can then be associated with waypoints on your map. The speaker allows this GPS device to be used as an MP3 player, so you won't need to haul your iPod out on the trail as well.

Moving beyond these features, Magellan also incorporated a 2-megapixel digital camera into this GPS device. It's not going to take the place of a high-end digital camera (for example, there's no flash), but if you want to get some quick and easy nature shots to show your friends what to find at the trail's end, it's an interesting convergence option. The 2000 even has an LED flashlight built in to help you find your way home in the dark.

The entire device is waterproof and water submersible, so even if you drop it into a stream, it should continue to work fine. There's an SD card slot for uploading more maps and MP3 files, so you can expand on the North American basemap that comes preloaded on the device.

This GPS device weighs eight ounces, so it will not go unnoticed in your pocket, but it's still fairly easy to port around. It's powered by two AA batteries that provide an average of 10 hours of battery life--just using the GPS receiver--so you'll want to bring along some spares.

When companies conflate so many features into one device, it often happens that few, if any, of them work well. The Magellan Triton 2000 is an exception. There are good reasons to have all of these options in a handheld GPS device and they all function quite well. If you've got to have the best of the best in terms of a handheld device, the Magellan Triton 2000 has it all.

Pro: Touchscreen display, camera and recorder
Con: Expensive, no radio with MP3 player
