The Logitech QuickCam Fusion combines impressive video quality with clear audio in a lightweight, compact webcam. This unit captures video at resolutions up to 640X480, at up to 30 frames per second, which is fairly standard for webcams. What sets the QuickCam Fusion apart from the crowd is the quality of its images. Logitech's new RightLight 2 technology helps produce clear images even in low-light situations.

The flexible mount fits easily over an LCD or notebook display. It can also stretch to sit on a flat surface, such as a desktop or the top of a CRT, although we didn't find it to be very stable for this purpose.

The built-in microphone uses Logitech's RightSound technology to reduce or eliminate audio echoes. A face-tracking feature lets you chat comfortably without worrying about falling out of the frame. The ultrawide lens also lets you chat and move around comfortably, providing room for additional chatters to join you. Keep in mind, however, that the face-tracking can only follow one face at a time.

Unlike many webcams that rely on software enhancement to bump up the still-image resolution, the QuickCam Fusion captures stills at up to 1.3 megapixels without software enhancement and up to four megapixels with it. This can't compare to a quality digital camera, but it's not a bad substitute if your budget can't afford both.

The QuickCam Fusion is compatible with most popular instant messaging programs, including Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, AIM and Windows Messenger. The package includes Logitech Video Effects, with animated 3-D avatars that mimic your expressions and movements, and 2-D Face Accessories that you can use when you're in the mood for a quick personality change. Both features work with most popular instant messaging programs.

In addition to the software already mentioned, the package includes Yahoo! Messenger (Windows XP only) and QuickCapture for capturing, editing and printing images, as well as one-click e-mail software for sharing video and still images with friends and family.

The Logitech QuickCam Fusion is a winner of a webcam, with excellent video quality, great still-image quality and echo-free audio.
