Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks Pro

Date Published: 5/24/07

Logitech's QuickCam for Notebooks Pro is a tiny webcam with a big resolution. The unit itself is smaller than a Bic lighter and weighs only 2.5 ounces, making it a perfect webcam to toss into a laptop bag for video conferencing and chatting on the road.

This QuickCam comes with a protective carrying case for transport, and it easily clips on top of most laptop screens. However, you can also use this webcam with your desktop computer. The included stand lets you set the webcam anywhere on your desk, and if you install the software on both your desktop and laptop computers, you can easily move the QuickCam back and forth.

Even though it's so tiny, this QuickCam houses a lot of power. The 1.3-megapixel sensor lets you capture high-resolution video and still images that can be software-enhanced up to 4 megapixels. The built-in RightLight 2 technology does a nice job of improving the image quality in low-light conditions.

There's also an integrated microphone, so you don't have to use this webcam with a headset. For more private conversations, however, Logitech includes an over-the-ear headset.

Logitech's QuickCam software has myriad video effects you can add to your image, from facial accessories such as mustaches and masks, to full-blown avatars that match your expressions. You need a high-end PC to get the most from some of these extras, but they're a fun diversion, especially for younger users. There are even more effects available for download from the Logitech website.

If you're running Vista, Logitech also offers some nifty extras for the new operating system, including a motion-sensitive gadget that can be set to record video when it detects any movement. Speaking of movement, this QuickCam won't physically pan and tilt to track you like some of Logitech's high-end desktop webcams, but it does include software tracking. On the plus side, it has a wide field of view of up to 78 degrees, so multiple folks can get into the picture.

If you're looking for a miniscule webcam to take on the road, Logitech's QuickCam for Notebooks Pro carries a big punch in a small package.

Pros: Very light and compact, high resolution, multiple image effects
Cons: No physical pan-and-tilt tracking, some features require Vista or a high-end PC

2 years, hardware
