Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks Deluxe

Date Published: 2/21/08

Logitech's QuickCam for Notebooks Deluxe offers more features and better image quality than you might expect from its compact, unassuming design. Although it's not the cheapest webcam around, it's still a good entry-level choice for individuals who have no previous experience with webcams and who may be on the fence about whether or not they actually need or want one.

The included CD walks you through the installation process. Plug in the provided USB cable, follow the prompts on the CD, and you can't go wrong. The package includes a clip for attaching the camera to standard notebook displays, as well as a special adapter for attaching the camera to thin notebook displays.

The QuickCam can capture video in the AVI format at a resolution of up to 640X480, at up to 15 frames per second. The camera can also capture still images at up to 1.3 megapixels (software enhanced), in standard JPG or BMP formats.

The manual focus ring is a comfortable size and easy to adjust. The Intelligent Face Tracking feature provides some freedom of movement by automatically keeping your face centered in the frame. Video quality is decent for a webcam in this price range, even in low-light situations, and audio quality is very good. The QuickCam includes controls for adjusting brightness, contrast, and color saturation, a feature you don't often find in webcams. An LCD light lets you know when the camera is on and transmitting, so you don't have to worry about inadvertently sending out video.

The QuickCam for Notebooks Deluxe works with most popular instant messaging programs and services, including Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Messenger, MSN Messenger, and AOL Instant Messenger. The package includes a built-in microphone, USB cable, notebook clip, notebook adapter, neoprene travel case, set-up guide, and CD with drivers and software.

The Logitech QuickCam is a low-cost solution for top quality video and for a good sound experience.

Pro: Lightweight, compact design. Reasonably good video and still images, even in low-light situations. Includes a built-in microphone.
Con: The face-tracking feature is sometimes erratic or slow to lock on to movement. Both the clip and the adapter don't fit securely over some displays.
