Logitech EasyCall Desktop

Date Published: 3/2/07

If there's a class of peripherals even more at the center of your computing experience than your monitor, it's your input devices. Companies such as Logitech are making this even more the case with products like the EasyCall Desktop. In addition to being a wireless keyboard and mouse combination, the EasyCall Desktop features a speakerphone and headset to conduct VoIP conversations with a minimum of fuss.

The EasyCall Desktop's speakerphone is about the size and shape of a sunglass case, and it serves double-duty as the receiver for the wireless mouse and keyboard. Thus, you only need to use one USB port on your PC to connect your mouse, keyboard and VoIP input/output.

The full-duplex speakerphone works quite well positioned in front of you on your desktop, and the built-in RightSound technology cancels echoes and tones down background noise. There's also a headset that plugs into the speakerphone, letting you conduct your VoIP calls in private.

The EasyCall Desktop isn't just about phone calls, however. The comfortable keyboard has lots of multimedia controls, as well as keys for starting and ending VoIP calls. Our only beef with the keyboard is that the Escape and Function keys are smaller than normal, so it takes some hunting and pecking to hit them reliably.

The laser mouse fits nicely in hand thanks to rubber grips and its smooth contours. It's for right-handers only, but the mouse also features some handy extras including zoom in/out buttons for enlarging images or text, as well as back and forward buttons next to the thumb grip to aid in web browsing.

The mouse and keyboard each uses two AA batteries (included), so you'll eventually need to replace them. Thankfully, both components have a handy battery life indicator to let you know when the batteries are running down.

Logitech offers a lengthy 5-year warranty on this set of input devices, which retails for a hefty $130. However, if you're looking for a convenient way to incorporate your VoIP audio into your computing, the Logitech EasyCall Desktop has all the tools you need for crisp and clear internet conversations.

Pros:  Full-duplex speakerphone, cordless mouse and keyboard
Cons:  Right-handed mouse, small Escape and Function keys
