Life Fitness 95Li

Date Published: 11/8/07

The 95Li is one of two new Life Fitness machines known as Summit Trainers that combine a stair stepper with a total body trainer. The device offers five different training positions that feature different stride lengths, which range from short, quick strides that resemble the motion of a traditional stair stepper to longer lunges that feel more like using an elliptical machine. This is the entry-level unit in the Summit Trainer range, as much as any device that costs this much can be referred to as "entry-level."

We find that the Life Fitness 95Li delivers a challenging cardiovascular workout, and we appreciate its ability to double the effectiveness of our exercise by adding an upper body workout. Additionally, the ability to vary stride length is a good way to prevent workouts from becoming repetitive. The 95Li also offers an impressive selection of different exercise programs. The five-zone training programs automatically adjust resistance to ensure that your heart rate stays within the target zone for the most beneficial fat burning or cardiovascular exercise routine. Heart rate is monitored either via sensors built into the 95Li's handlebars or through the hands-free Polar telemetry chest strap. The 95Li also offers four classic workouts -- hill, random, manual and quick start -- along with six interval training programs, six custom programs and four goal workouts that let you work toward the target time, distance, steps or calories burned. There is also a fit test and a cool-down program.

This machine clearly offers far more versatility and provides a more varied workout than a traditional stair stepper. It is a little larger than more traditional machines, with a footprint of 68X33 inches and a weight of 351 pounds. Since the 95Li is self-powered, though, you'll be able to place it just about anywhere that you have the space in your home, rather than being limited to a position close to a power outlet. This changes, however, if you decide to add the optional LCD entertainment system. In its standard configuration, the 95Li offers a dual-level alphanumeric LED console, a handy accessory tray for holding an MP3 player and an integrated reading rack.

By combining a total body trainer with a stair stepper, the Life Fitness 95Li provides a varied, effective workout, but for as much as we'd spend on this unit, we'd rather just buy two separate machines.

Pros: Commercial-quality construction, offers a total body workout, heart rate monitoring via chest strap or hand sensors
Cons: Heavy, bulky, very expensive

Warranty
