LG VX8350 Mobile Phone

Date Published: 2/12/08

The LG VX8350 Mobile Phone is a lightweight clamshell device with an excellent design that focuses on functionality. The phone itself is extremely comfortable to hold and has well-spaced buttons that make for great ergonomics. With its shapely design, the device fits intuitively along your ear. And due to its minimal 3-ounce weight, the VX8350 is especially good for people who spend a lot of time on the phone. As with the 1.2-inch external LCD, inside the phone is another 256K-color screen, though this one measures 2 inches diagonally. Both are vibrant and richly display images and/or video.

For a monthly fee, the VX8350 offers access to the Navigator service, which uses the onboard GPS locator to provide turn-by-turn directions, maps, and information on nearby points of interest. This same GPS device is utilized in the Chaperone service, which can notify other phones when a handset walks outside of a predefined area.

Meanwhile, the V Cast service allows audiophiles to easily download music through the EVDO high-speed network. Album art and track info are displayed on the external LCD, under which are the controls for the music player. Sound output for the music player is notably good, especially when using headphones (and especially if using stereo Bluetooth headphones). Bluetooth can also be used for transferring files to your PC or elsewhere. Playback remains quite good when using the speakerphone, which has its own dedicated button. And if you're on a plane, the phone can be turned off while leaving the music player on.

Though the camera takes only 1.3-megapixel pictures, color quality is quite good and images are crisp. Unfortunately, there is not a flash for the camera, and the videos taken are average in quality. The external screen serves as a viewfinder when taking self-portraits.

Despite having quite a few features, it is the quality of the phone that will please most consumers. Call quality is superb with the VX8350. Conversations were extremely clear and reception was also excellent. The battery provided about four hours of talk time and a week of standby. Other features include a 1000-contact phonebook, photo ID, memo recorder, voice commands, and vibrating ringer. Another especially useful feature is a voice recorder that can store up to 5 minutes of a phone call or up to an hour of a voice memo.

Overall, the VX8350 is an excellent inexpensive phone that concentrates its strengths on the phone while also providing quite a few extras.

Pros: excellent call clarity, comfortable design, great internal and external LCDs, MP3 player performs well
Cons: no flash, so-so video
