Of the two styles of steam-enhanced front-loading washers that LG Electronics offers, the SteamWasher WM2487H with Allergiene comes in the common stackable design, so it can be paired with a dryer on top. As high tech as a washer can get, this model has it all: steam, stain removal, automated everything, a delay timer, an Extra Rinse setting and one of the highest spin speeds on the market.

Taking promotion of its steam feature a step further than any other steam-enhanced brand, LG is focusing on this model's ability to effectively remove dust mites and other allergens from fabrics. This claim appears to be accurate, although the Allergiene washer itself doesn't differ in any notable way from other steam machines. Any steam-enhanced washing machine should be able to elicit the same effect.

Fairly new to the industry, Steam models thus far have proven quite effective at boosting stain removal and promoting wrinkle release. Reports of problems have been minimal, but keep in mind that this technology doesn't yet have much of a track record. The price of the WM2487H is in the range of what we anticipate will be its highest. As prices begin to slide, the appeal of this model is expected to greatly increase -- and its appeal to us will increase as well. Since LG has the most experience in steam washers of any manufacturer, we would strongly lean toward an LG machine if steam were our deciding factor in our purchase right now.

Looking beyond the steam-assist of this washer, we find all the features we've come to expect from premium front-loading models. We especially like the 1200 rpm maximum spin speed that really does the trick for removing excess water from clothing. This feature alone is one that cuts drying times dramatically. The capacity of the WM2487H is one of the largest. At 4.2 cubic feet, this unit will not disappoint as far as how much it can wash at a single time. Versatile installation options also abound, but are pretty much the same as on other models across the board. You can stack, elevate or build in this unit. Just be sure to check all measurements carefully to ensure a proper fit.

A sweetheart of a machine, LG's WM2487H comes in white or bright cherry red, and is our current personal favorite steam-enhanced machine -- now if the price would only come down.
