LG Electronics 50PC5D 50-Inch Plasma HDTV

Date Published: 1/28/08

Many HDTVs don't handle standard-definition content very well, but that is not the case with the LG Electronics 50PC5D. This 50-inch plasma HDTV delivers a good SD picture and a great HD picture, all at a very reasonable price.

The move to HD is finally on the fast track, with the switch to all-digital over-the-air broadcasting scheduled for early 2009, followed by cable in 2012. Of course, there is still a lot of time left to watch analog SD programming. In addition, many older shows just can't get the HD treatment, and if you've amassed a collection of DVD or even VHS, you'll no doubt want to continue to enjoy those old movies and TV shows. If you're in the market for a big-screen plasma set, the 50PC5D gives you the best of both worlds.

The 50PC5D has a stylish design, with a glossy black exterior and just a bit of silver highlighting. Stereo speakers are located in a single bar below the screen, providing a simple yet sleek-looking set that is a mere 3-1/2 inches deep and weighs just 76.3 pounds without the speaker stand.

This plasma HDTV features a native resolution of 1,366x768, so it can handle all 720p HD content from a satellite dish or cable box. Standard-definition, 1,080i and 1,080p content are scaled to fit the available pixels. While you're not likely to confuse a 1980s SD sitcom with a current HD prime-time drama, the display of lower-resolution content is certainly well above average with the 50PC5D.

Additionally, the 50PC5D features a plethora of aspect ratio modes to accommodate various content, including four modes for HD content and a fifth called "set by program" that adjusts the aspect automatically. There are also an impressive five selection modes for SD content. Thus, you can zoom in, stretch or find some middle ground that expands and stretches the picture so you don't have to deal with black bars on the sides.

It should be noted that the picturebox format, or the black bars on the sides of SD programming, is sometimes considered an issue, as it can result in uneven wear on the screen. Fortunately, the 50PC5D features multiple technologies to combat this and other screen-damaging effects, such as burn-in or image retention. These defenses include a feature called "Image Sticking Minimization" which consists of an orbiter option and a whitewash feature, negating any worries of burn-in.

The 50PC5D doesn't skimp on picture controls. It features five picture presets, including two user presets so you can fully customize the picture for different light conditions, for example. You can also set the color temperature and black levels. Despite these options, we did notice that the 50PC5D has a noticeable problem with inaccurate colors, with many images appearing too green. This is especially apparent with various HD sources.

Getting your programming onto the screen can be a bit of a problem, as the 50PC5D only offers two HDMI inputs, both located at the rear of the set. There are also only two component video inputs, a VGA (PC) input and an S-video/composite video input. Fortunately there is a second S-video/composite input on the side panel, but a third HDMI or component video input would be much more welcome. On the plus side, there is an RS-232 control port, which isn't usually found on lower-end HDTVs like the 50PC5D.

This television has a single optical digital audio output, along with a pair of 10-watt speakers. However, the audio is a bit underpowered for a 50-inch set. The speaker system does have a two-way, four-system detail. It features a Dolby Digital decoder and an SRS TruSurround XT system.

The complaints are relatively minor, so if you're seeking a large and affordable flat-panel HDTV, this one is hard to beat. The LG Electronics 50PC5D offers a big screen that can handle HD and SD content very well, and even if the colors are bit off, it is still a fine-looking picture.

Pros: Good upscaling of standard-definition content, good black levels, good value
Cons: Underpowered audio, only two HDMI inputs, inaccurate colors with some content
