LG Electronics 42LB1DR 42-inch LCD HDTV with integrated DVR
Date Published: 6/26/08
LG Electronics takes television one step farther with its 42LB1DR, a 42-inch LCD HDTV with an integrated digital video recorder (DVR). The television is a high-performance model in its own right, and with the addition of the DVR, the 42LB1DR raises high-definition viewing to a new level.
The 42LB1DR's DVR has a capacity of 160GB, which is enough to store up to 15 hours of HD content or 66 hours of standard programming. While this may sound like a lot, it may not be sufficient if you are a serious TV fan. With the help of the TV Guide On Screen program guide, you can schedule to record shows in advance. In addition, the 42LB1DR has the usual DVR abilities that allow you to pause live TV and replay a missed line of dialogue or great play. The DVR lacks more advanced TiVo functions like SeasonPass, but you also don't have to pay TiVo's $12-per-month subscription fee.
The widescreen 42LB1DR has a native resolution of 1,366X768, and there are four color temperature modes and five video presets to fine-tune images to your exact standards. The result is a clear and detailed picture with bright and realistic colors, although black levels are not quite up to par with plasma or CRT sets. Viewing angles of 178 degrees both vertically and horizontally ensure that every seat in the room is a good one.
LG Electronics has included a standard assortment of convenience features in the 42LB1DR, including PIP and split-screen viewing options, a picture freeze function, favorite channel memory and multiple timers. The package comes with a pedestal stand for placement on a table or countertop, or you can mount the 42LB1DR on the wall with separately available hardware. Also included is a backlit universal remote control with smartly spaced buttons.
In addition to a set of composite video inputs on the side panel, the 42LB1DR's back panel has a decent selection of connection options. These include a pair of component video inputs, two HDMI inputs, an IR remote input for creating a home theater network that can be controlled through the TV, a PC input and an optical digital audio output. A CableCARD slot means the 42LB1DR is digital cable-ready.
If you plan to upgrade your TV and have been considering adding a digital video recorder, give strong consideration to LG Electronics' 42LB1DR.
Pros: Integrated HD DVR, smooth operation from a complex combination system
