It's not unusual for manufacturers to claim that their laser printers are speed demons, but in the case of the Lexmark T640, the claim is actually true. While the T640 may not always hit the manufacturer's rating of 35 pages per minute for letter-size pages, it doesn't usually fall far short of the mark.

This compact laser printer is as easy to use as it is to set up. All controls are available from a control panel on the top front of the printer. A USB port in the control panel lets you plug in a USB Flash drive and print PDF files directly from the drive.

Although the T640 supports printing resolutions of up to 1,200X1,200 dpi, output quality is mixed. Text and line art are generally crisp and clear, but photos and other grayscale images tend to be somewhat grainy.

The T640 ships with a 250-sheet input tray. A fold-up multipurpose tray, available on the back of the printer, can hold up to 100 sheets of plain paper. The output tray (the top of the printer) can hold up to 250 sheets of plain paper.

In addition to above-average print speeds, the T640 also offers a number of expandability options, making it an ideal choice for home office or small business use. If you have the space and your budget can handle it, you can add enough paper trays to make the T640 capable of printing several thousand pages without stopping for a refill. Other options include a 250-sheet duplex unit, an envelope feeder and a five-bin mailbox.

The T640 ships with 64MB RAM, which is expandable to 576MB for handling large print jobs. If you want to add the T640 to a network later, several wired and wireless options are available. There are also other models in the T640 series that are already network-ready..
