Lexmark P315 Photo Printer

Date Published: 3/13/07

The Lexmark P315 takes the dedicated photo printer concept to a new level. This compact model can only print from memory cards or PictBridge-compatible digital cameras and camcorders. It cannot under any circumstances print from a computer, and it doesn't even include a computer-compatible input port. That's not an entirely bad thing; although, you won't be able to use your favorite photo-editing software for any pre-print tweaking.

The P315 also redefines the concept of portability…sort of. Although it is lightweight (about 7 pounds) and has a built-in handle, it doesn't accept a battery. Thus, the P315 is eminently portable as long as you don't stray too far from a power outlet.

There are four built-in card readers that accept most of the popular memory card formats. The P315 can also print from any PictBridge-compatible camera. Configuration is easy, as there is very little to set up and no drivers or software to install.

The P315 is a three-color (cyan, magenta and yellow) thermal inkjet printer that supports printing resolutions of up to 4,800X1,200 dpi. It's rated for a maximum of 125 prints per month, which reinforces the portability concept. In general, the P315 is intended for printing photos when you can't access a computer, and it assumes that you won't go crazy and print hundreds of photos during your vacation or business trip.

Print quality is excellent. Colors are rich and bright, and color fidelity is above average. Detail is generally good, in both light and dark areas. You can print 4X6-inch photos with or without borders, as well as the less-common A6 and L sizes. The 2-1/2-inch LCD display lets you view your photos before printing. Built-in editing options are limited to cropping and adjusting brightness.

The Lexmark P315 is a capable portable photo printer that produces very satisfactory results. However, we find it difficult to recommend spending $100 on a printer that can't print from a computer, shouldn't print more than 125 prints a month, can't print anything larger than 4X6 inches, and requires a power outlet.

Pros:  Excellent output quality, relatively fast print speeds, lightweight and portable (to a certain degree)
Cons:  Can only print from memory cards and PictBridge-compatible cameras, can't print anything larger than 4X6 inches, requires a power outlet
