Lensbaby 2.0 50mm lens

Date Published: 4/13/06

The most unusual 50mm Lensbaby 2.0 interchangeable lens has been considerably improved over the original Lensbaby, and is now available in different mounts to fit almost any brand of interchangeable lens SLR camera. The main enhancement is a full stop faster maximum speed of f/2. The Lensbaby 2.0 gives more aperture options and maintains a sharply focused "sweet spot" through the range of aperture settings.

The drop-in lens aperture rings are now suspended in place magnetically, therefore are much easier to insert and remove when changing lens speed for different depth-of-fields. The Lensbaby 2.0, which works with any 35mm SLR camera (including digital), gives the user the capability of tilting the lens so it's off parallel to the film plane, thereby altering the plane of sharp focus. This creates a sweet spot of sharp focus, surrounded by a ring of soft focus. This is possible since the lens has a flexible tubular body similar to a bellows, which allows the lens to be tilted up or down, left or right. It is a bit tedious to use as the camera has to be set for aperture priority (depending upon which aperture ring is placed in front of the lens) then a finger from each hand has to first focus by moving the lens forward or back, then tilt and hold onto the front of the lens after the desired focus effect is visible in the viewfinder, now the shutter is tripped to take the picture. This is a bit awkward to accomplish, but well worth the effort.

The results are quite spectacular with a shallow plane of sharp focus surrounded by a softer image, especially when used wide open at f/2. Stopped down there is a sharper area but still lots of soft focus when the lens is tilted. The original Lensbaby was created to mimic the "dreamy" effects of the Holga, Diana and similar to which gives a more out-of-focus sweet spot when the lens is maneuvered into different focus planes for creative visual effects when one plane of the image is in sharp focus while the top or bottom, or left or right are considerably softer in focus. This places emphasis on the desired part of the composition while the rest of the picture is out of focus.
