Ladybug XL2300 canister-style steam cleaner
Date Published: 7/2/08
The Ladybug XL2300 is a heavy-duty canister-style steam cleaner. It can be used on carpets and has attachments that make it useful for other surfaces as well. The XL2300 is a true steam cleaner because it has an internal heating mechanism to bring water to boiling. This, in turn, produces steam. The pressurized steam is then released through one of the attachments. The Ladybug XL2300 produces steam that reaches 298 degrees Fahrenheit. Other models, even heavy-duty expensive models, may only produce steam that reaches 250 degrees Fahrenheit. The primary benefit is that higher temperatures of steam typically clean more difficult set-in stains.
We tested the Ladybug XL2300 on carpets of varying heights and were impressed with its performance. Not only did it remove soil and stains, but it also worked without the use of chemical-laden cleaners. We were initially concerned the steam would leave carpets too damp for our liking, but the Ladybug's advanced steam regulation features allowed us to control how much steam was applied, and the carpets dried quickly.
The Ladybug XL2300 has a dual tank capacity of 1.8 quarts and 1.5 quarts. It uses a continuous-fill system. This is an important distinction, because a continuous-fill system allows the user to simply add more water to the boiler when needed. Otherwise, one must wait for the machine to cool completely before beginning again. This can be time-consuming and inconvenient, particularly if one is tackling large cleaning projects.
Although it offers more cleaning power than many conventional "steam" cleaners that don't actually produce steam, the Ladybug is surprisingly lightweight. Without water, it only weighs about 17 pounds. Rolling casters make it easy to maneuver. In addition to the floor cleaner attachment used to steam-clean carpets, the Ladybug also comes with two extension wands, crevice tool and brushes. If one is in the market for a carpet steam cleaner that also works on hard surfaces such as tile, countertops and windows, the Ladybug XL2300 may just be worth the (admittedly steep) price. The well-designed Ladybug stores all the tools on board, and has convenience features such as a low-water indicator light and steam-regulator controls.
While some more expensive models include a microbe killer that offers results certified by laboratory testing, for many households the Ladybug XL2300 adequately conquers most dust mites and allergens. Although the cost of the Ladybug XL2300 is worth serious consideration, as is the potential danger of working with steam, it is a heavy-duty cleaner that will make short work of dirty carpets and other household surfaces.
