Konami Karaoke Revolution Party video game
Date Published: 5/22/06
The idea behind the video game Karaoke Revolution Party, available for Xbox, PS2, and GameCube is based on the fact that karaoke is different in Asia than it is in the United States. Rather than singing in front of a bar full of strangers, you're usually in a room of your own filled with close friends cheering you on.
This video game requires a microphone (or two), and you can pick up a bundle that includes a mic or there are plenty of third-party offerings out there. The video game is pretty similar between all three consoles, although you can download new songs with Xbox Live and the PS2 version supports the EyeToy so you can get a 3D model of your head into the game. Even without the EyeToy, you can fully customize your on-screen avatar from body shape and hair to clothes and accessories.
Like Konami's Dance Dance Revolution series, in this video game you have to hit the notes at the right time to get the maximum score. But unlike DDR, you also have to hit the notes at the right pitch (although you can sing in any key). You might think you've got what it takes to get on American Idol, but it can be humbling to sing off-key notes and earn boos. On the other end of things, it's incredibly satisfying to really nail a song and have the crowd go wild.
Karaoke Revolution Party also offers a song and dance mode, so if you have a DDR dance pad, the video game incorporates it in and tests your moves along with your singing voice. There are multiplayer modes in the video game so you and a buddy can croon out a duet together or sing songs to compete in mini games.
The video game's song list is pretty impressive, with over 50 songs, although you'll have to unlock some of them. The songs include old favorites and new hits ranging from Brick House and the karaoke staple Sweet Caroline to Crazy in Love and Headstrong.
Karaoke Revolution Party is a lot of fun for anyone who loves to belt out their favorite tunes. And you can do it without embarrassment as this video game lets you sing in the privacy of your own home.
