When you want a bike from people who know how to have fun, call Kona. This quirky bunch of jokesters in the Pacific Northwest are the definition of fun, but in between all the craziness they make some fine bicycles. The often-overlooked NuNu is one of their best. The NuNu (Hawaiian for a grunting sound of celebration, sort of like a pig) is that rarest of creations: a real, solid, cheap mountain bike. The butted aluminum frame is available in seven sizes (many manufacturers only make four) so you can fine-tune your bike's fit in the store. The 14-inch size will fit riders down to around 6'6" tall, and at the other end of the spectrum the 23-inch size will accommodate riders as tall as 6'6" (that's quite a range, particularly on an inexpensive bike). And it's kitted with a level of parts that we often see on bikes costing hundreds more. To wit: a complete nine-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain, Avid brakes, Rock Shox Judy TT suspension fork, Mavic rims, and Tioga tires. The NuNu is a great buy because it's a thoughtfully designed, built, and kitted bike that will allow you endless hours of enjoyment, and it's priced on average $100 less than similarly outfitted competitors.
