Klipsch Quintet III

Date Published: 3/11/08

Because of the attention to build quality and performance in a small package, The Klipsch Synergy Series Quintet III Microsystem is one of the better micro home theater speaker systems we have come across.

This little system offers a lot of sound within a small footprint. Each of the four satellites utilizes a 0.75-inch aluminum diaphragm tweeter mated to a MicroTractrix Horn and a 3.5-inch woofer. The cabinets are a bass reflex design and all the speakers are magnetically shielded. The center channel has two 3.5-inch woofers. Included are pre-attached, swiveling pedestal bases that also serve as wall mounts for the satellites. We thought this was a very nice touch and meant that we would not have to pay extra to mount them to our living room walls.

Upon picking up one of the satellites we instantly noticed these were not the run of the mill little plastic boxes which make up the bulk of the micro home theater speaker market. Weighing in at 3.5 lbs each and standing only 8.3 inches tall, these little speakers are very well built. Looking at the back revealed something else not usually associated with micro speaker systems, and that is the lack of spring clip speaker terminals. These little guys have real binding posts.

At first listen we noticed another thing that does not coincide with micro speaker systems. These speakers had the ability to play at volume levels that make a movie soundtrack an experience that was more than just being surrounded by five transistor radio speakers in fancy little swiveling cubes. Klipsch has always used horns or horn loaded tweeters in their designs and few in the market do it better. You may have to forget any preconceived notions of what you think a horn tweeter sounds like, because Klipsch tweeters may surprise you.

The sound from these little speakers was clear, focused and of course perfectly timbre-matched. The tweeters could reach decibel levels that would melt 0.75-inch drivers found in many other micro speaker systems. Crossed over correctly with a home theater receiver and coupled with a decent subwoofer, these little speakers will provide ample volume in small and medium-small rooms.

There are a plethora of micro speaker systems available, but there are few at this price point that can offer the same level of performance and build quality the Klipsch offer. For the home theater enthusiast on a budget or someone looking for a quality, compact system, The Klipsch Synergy Series Quintet III offers an excellent value.

Pros: Excellent build quality, included mounts/stands
Cons: Separate Surround Back satellites not sold individually, subwoofer needs to be purchased separately
