KitchenAid KHMS2056S over-the-range microwave oven

We love the innovative new design of the KitchenAid KHM2056S 36-inch over-the-range microwave oven. It's a perfect visual complement to any new high-end kitchen. Unfortunately, good looks is where much of our excitement with this new product ends.
The first thing that perplexes us is why KitchenAid has added a messy and ineffective browning tray to this intriguing product. We gave up on browning trays in the microwave years ago and returned this task to the appliances that do it best -- the stovetop and the oven.
The other function we don't quite understand is the sensor. We applaud the addition of a sensor to any microwave, but this one is difficult to use for everything except popcorn and reheating. A sensor is a great feature -- but only if it is easy to operate and very clear what foods it can handle. This one is confusing and the instructions are equally vague.
KitchenAid is promoting the KHMS2056S as a more efficient way to vent over gas burners. In reality, this hood draws the same minimal 300 CFM of just about every other over-the-range product on the market. KitchenAid claims this unit offers improved smoke, odor and grease filtration, but quite frankly we just don't see it.
In spite of what may seem like a lot of complaints, we did find some things to like about this model other than the exterior design. The non-stick interior is a helpful addition, especially if you attempt pan-frying, crisping or browning. Splatters are not obvious on the gray interior walls and wiping them up is quite easy. We also like the excellent lighting system in the bottom of the oven. Not one but two bright lights are used to illuminate the cooking surface.
When it comes to basic microwaving tasks, the KHMS2056S performs similarly to units costing far less. It offers 1200 watts of power and cooks rapidly. With a capacity of 2.0 cubic feet, this model has one of the largest interiors of any over-the-range oven you'll find, making it sufficient for the needs of a busy family.
This product illustrates KitchenAid's prowess in design as well as its lack of experience in engineering microwave ovens. The KHMS2056 has an exterior design that's impressive, but expensive functions that make little sense beyond the basic.
Pros: Extraordinary exterior design, good basic microwaving functions, excellent lighting
Cons: Browning tray adds substantially to the cost and is messy and ineffective, expensive sensor is difficult to use, effectiveness of ventilation is over rated by manufacturer
