KitchenAid KESS908S slide-in electric range
Date Published: 1/14/08
A bit more high-tech than the typical slide-in electric range, the 30-inch KESS908S from KitchenAid utilizes electronic touch controls for the cooktop in place of traditional knobs. Although the control of the elements doesn't differ greatly from knobs, the cleaning is considerably easier. To clean this top, simply wipe with soap and water. Since there are no knobs, you don't have wipe around them or remove them for thorough cleaning. We like the novelty of these controls, but more importantly we like the sleek, contemporary look of this range without knobs.
The high-tech touches of the KES908S don't end with the controls. The elements themselves offer more versatility than you're likely to find on any other single range. They include a dual element, a triple element and an expandable dual element that works like a bridge. The dual and triple elements have multiple concentric rings of heat. To use them, simply choose one that best fits the size of your pan.
The bridge style element is a bit more complex. It offers a dual circuit, which allows you to use the rings together to create an oval heated surface. The surface is useful for large pots and odd-size cookware. We like it for making gravy on the stovetop in an oval roaster. With a little creativity, you're sure to find other uses for this unique element.
This well-engineered appliance offers more than just the usual run-of-the-mill oven as well. The variable self-cleaning oven offers convection with a setting that will evenly cook full-size meat. The broiler also is top-of-the-line with an inner and an outer broil element. Use both broil elements for large portions or save electricity by using only the inner element when cooking for one or two people.
We've long respected what KitchenAid can do with a range and this model hasn't changed our opinion. The manufacturer continues its practice of keeping up with trends and offering a superior product. In this case, they've created a fine range and added the increasingly popular lower warming drawer.
The KESS908S is a fine range that doesn't disappoint. It may have a premium pricetag, but what it offers makes it a Best Buy in our book.
Pros: Well engineered range with a design and features that don't disappoint
Cons: Expect to pay a premium for this model
