KitchenAid KCMS185JSS microwave oven

Date Published: 6/26/07

The KitchenAid KCMS185JSS is a countertop microwave oven that can be easily converted into a built-in unit. This microwave offers some great features, but it commands a high price because of its versatile trim kit options.

If you don't plan to using this microwave as a built-in unit, you can most definitely save some money by purchasing a comparable countertop microwave. However, if your plan requires that your microwave be a built-in model, you may want to consider this fairly costly model because of the availability of a number of versatile trim kits. KitchenAid offers a wide variety of kits to help you install this model and get exactly the look you want. Choose the kit that's right for you and pair the KCMS185JSS with either a 27- or 30-inch oven in a flush or non-flush mount.

When it comes to features, you can't go wrong with this innovative model. KitchenAid's KCMS185JSS has two types of sensors -- one which allows you to cook plenty of raw foods and one which provides flawless reheating. These sensors eliminate the errors of overcooking and underheating foods, especially when you vary the portion size. No more guesswork means accurate cooking and reheating, time after time. Just remember to use the sensor for the proper category of food.

In addition to the two sensors, we like the preset convenient cycles, which are particularly helpful to those who enjoy baking. Use these cycles for getting your ingredients into just the right form. Melt chocolate and marshmallows, soften butter and cream cheese and thaw frozen juice all with the simple touch of a preset cycle.

The KCMS185JSS offers an automated defrost program that is typical of mid to expensive range microwave ovens. Its 1.8-cubic-foot capacity is spacious enough and the 1100 watts of cooking power will produce fast results.

Equipped with an unusual nightlight that comes on when darkness is sensed, this microwave provides some light for the path of late night wanderers in the kitchen. We couldn't help but appreciate this novel feature.

An all around well-featured model, with some unexpected upgrades, KitchenAid's KCMS185JSS may be a bit pricey but it's destined to take its place over many a built-in oven.

Pros: Two sensors for both cooking and reheating, many optional trim kits make it excellent as a built-in, sensor nightlight, convenient pre-set features for baking
Cons: Expensive when compared to similarly featured countertop models
