KitchenAid 36-Inch Dual Fuel Range with Griddle KDRP463LSS

Date Published: 8/27/08

KitchenAid's KDRP463LSS is a premium stainless steel range that can be used in either a freestanding or slide-in configuration. We like it for slide-in use, because it builds in seamlessly, while offering much of the outstanding performance of a true commercial range.

Although this model is equipped with many professional features, it offers them with a twist that makes for better cooking results in the home. While most restaurants use gas for stovetop cooking and oven baking, this model improves upon the baking by including the preferred and more residentially friendly electric oven. Not only does the electric oven offer nice even convection, it delivers a convenience not all commercial-style gas ovens can: an easy-to-use and effective self-cleaning oven.

Larger than a typical range, the KDRP463LSS will require a 36-inch wide space. You will need to ensure you have more than the standard amount of room allotted for a range should you choose this model. Allowing 36 inches for this range will give you an exceedingly large oven -- in this case 5.1 cubic feet of baking and roasting capacity.
Those who enjoy bread baking will be thrilled with the bread proofing setting. This setting maintains an even heat of just 100 degrees Fahrenheit for just the perfect rising of yeast doughs.

The cooktop surface of this KitchenAid model is fairly typical of what is found in this price range. Two 6,000 Btu burners and two 15,000 Btu burners offer sufficient versatility for cooking at various temperatures. What's particularly impressive is the convenience of the center griddle. It's always available for pancakes and burgers, and makes a great place to heat tortillas and exotic breads such as the Indian staple paratha.

The KitchenAid KDRP463LSS sports easy-to-use controls, sensible knobs and simple, but accurate oven operation. We especially appreciated the exceptionally bright dual halogen bulbs that provide the interior lighting.

We'd recommend this range for a kitchen that's a bit roomier than most and for the cook who's looking for more and doesn't mind paying a premium for it. KitchenAid's KDRP463LSS is an outstanding dual-fuel range, but it requires what is, to most of us, a fairly large investment.

Pros: Excellent residential design with many commercial influences, works as a freestanding or slide-in
Cons: Expensive, stovetop burners are fairly standard considering the high price of the range
